there are good days and there are bad days
then there are days when they hold a broken mirror
to your face and say
this is a self-portrait
press seven shards of bad luck into your palms
like petals between pages
under the weight of a thousand words in every voice
except your own, but
you read them all anyway
let them take up space
your head, so heavy
and the bones in your legs aching like steel rods
this is how a lost train must come to resent its cargo
this is why people hide from store windows, and
calm lakes and silver spoons
you pour and you miss and you’re still left half empty
you want to speak and not hear your voice
you want to crawl out of this skin
burn the bad bits, then return
but you’re scared of being left with nothing
Very deep. Expressed equally well. ๐

If you can walk go out and walk, if you canโt look up at the cloud or stars.

Exquisite. So many different interpretations, beginning with the title to the last lines, a universal fear of burning “the bad bits” and being “left with nothing.”

This is so beautifully whittled
from all those places,
all those reflections
and small phrases…
small voices.
It resonates hugely,
like a thing singing its way home from distant,
heartbroken shores,
wondering how it found its way here.
It feels so much like the place I stand in,
I could hide a while in the shadows off what you wrote –
and feel less alone.

It is so hard to realize that often it’s the mirror that’s broken and not ourselves. When we accept that reflection as reality, it really is like shards of glass cutting into us.
