queen of the night

inspired by a film i recently enjoyed, Crazy Rich Asians

come find us, somewhere east of queens
in the spot the sun favours most
where there is so much to say i wish i had two tongues
and secrets are never held for more than a second

let me show you the art of dumplings
fill the insides with filial piety
wrap it in something other than an american flag
and press the edges together, tight

hey now dear, can’t you hear the mahjong sirens?
know that when you next draw the eight of bamboo
and the church finally floods again
i will have found the winning hand

last night i memorised your eyes against a backdrop of stars
so i could recognise you, even in another universe
tonight the tan huas will finally bloom
let me kiss you one last time, until they wilt

tell me one of these days, we’ll board a bus, miss our stop
on purpose, and another ten after that, to a place
where we can take as many times as we need to fall in love right
without anyone ever knowing

I know you must hear this dozens of times, but I luv your writing! I always read your posts but this is the first time I’ve ever commented. I hope you won’t mind this lengthy comment. There is a guy on another site, and every time I read his words, I think of you for some strange reason. I just know the two of you write the best verse I’ve ever read from non-famous writers. I would so luv to read a collab from you two. I just commented on his site for like the 12th time and I told him about you. He never responds back, nor posts my comments, but I asked him nicely this time. Maybe you could talk/write to him, read his words and ask him to write something with you. That could be awkward I know, but who knows? Perhaps it would lead to something great in the literary world. Lord knows we need more awesome writers. Forgive me for this weird comment, but I just had to write it.

Hi Nicole! This was so sweet of you 🙂 I have actually read a few pieces from the blog you’re referring to, and I agree with you that it’s wonderful. I’m not sure about collaboration at present, but it’s definitely something I’ll keep in mind for the future! I’m really glad that you like my work though – please feel free to comment more in the future! I’d love to hear more from you xx

Better than a movie. I enjoyed the way your composition, flow, and nonlogical logic conveys emotion and sensory associations. The mixing, too, of themes, generations and “rooms” of experience make the poem richer than another form of representation. The lines are strong, the images universal but particular. It is just long enough to create wonder and then come back home. This is great craft. thnks
